How to Calculate EV Charging Cost

Charging an EV is simple physics multiplied by your utility's price list. The amount of electricity a charge session delivers depends on how much of the battery you fill, and the price depends on where and when you charge:

Charging Cost = Battery Size (kWh) × (ΔCharge % ÷ 100) × Rate ($/kWh) ÷ Efficiency

Where:
  ΔCharge % = Target Charge − Current Charge
  Efficiency = charger efficiency as a decimal (0.90 = 90%)
  Cost per Mile = Rate ÷ Efficiency ÷ Vehicle Efficiency (mi/kWh)
  Monthly Cost = Miles Driven × Cost per Mile

Worked example: charging a 65 kWh battery from 20% to 80% transfers 65 × 0.60 = 39 kWh into the pack. With 90% charging efficiency you draw 39 ÷ 0.90 = 43.3 kWh from the wall.
