How to Use This EV Charging Cost Calculator
- Enter Battery Capacity — your EV's usable battery size in kWh (check the window sticker or spec sheet). A Tesla Model 3 is ~60 kWh, a Model Y ~75 kWh, a Chevy Equinox EV ~85 kWh.
- Set Vehicle Efficiency — most modern EVs achieve 2.5–4.0 miles per kWh. The EPA MPGe figure divided by 33.7 gives you this number.
- Choose Current and Target Charge — most drivers charge from 20% to 80% daily to protect battery health. Use 0→100% to price a full charge or a road-trip stop.
- Enter Your Electricity Rate — find it on your utility bill. The US residential average is ~$0.17/kWh in 2026. If you're on a time-of-use plan, use your overnight off-peak rate.
- Set Charging Efficiency — leave 90% for home Level 2 charging. Use ~88% for DC fast charging. This accounts for energy lost as heat during charging.

How to Calculate EV Charging Cost
Charging an EV is simple physics multiplied by your utility's price list. The amount of electricity a charge session delivers depends on how much of the battery you fill, and the price depends on where and when you charge:
Where:
ΔCharge % = Target Charge − Current Charge
Efficiency = charger efficiency as a decimal (0.90 = 90%)
Cost per Mile = Rate ÷ Efficiency ÷ Vehicle Efficiency (mi/kWh)
Monthly Cost = Miles Driven × Cost per Mile
Worked example: charging a 65 kWh battery from 20% to 80% transfers 65 × 0.60 = 39 kWh into the pack. With 90% charging efficiency you draw 39 ÷ 0.90 = 43.3 kWh from the wall. At $0.17/kWh, that session costs $7.36. If your EV averages 3.5 mi/kWh, your true cost per mile is 0.17 ÷ 0.90 ÷ 3.5 = $0.054, or about $5.40 per 100 miles.

7 Ways to Lower Your EV Charging Costs
- Switch to a time-of-use (TOU) plan. Overnight off-peak rates of $0.06–$0.12/kWh can cut charging costs by half versus peak rates.
- Schedule charging for off-peak windows. Nearly every EV lets you set departure-time charging through its app so the car fills up at the cheapest hours automatically.
- Avoid routine DC fast charging. At $0.40–$0.60/kWh it costs 2–3× home rates; save it for road trips.
- Check for free charging credits. Many new-EV purchases still include complimentary network credits, and some employers and grocery chains offer free Level 2 charging.
- Maintain 20–80% state of charge. Besides protecting the battery, smaller frequent top-ups pair well with off-peak scheduling.
