How to Convert Dog Years to Human Years
Dogs do not age at a steady 7 years per human year. Their development is fast at first and slows down later, and small breeds live longer than large breeds. The widely used scale from the American Animal Hospital Association is:
- Year 1: about 15 human years (puppies reach sexual maturity in their first year).
- Year 2: adds 9 human years (total 24) — the equivalent of a young adult.
- Years 3+: about 4 human years per dog year for small breeds, 5 for medium, 6 for large, and 7 for giant breeds.
Example: a 7-year-old medium-breed dog = 15 + 9 + (5 × 5) = 49 human years. A 7-year-old Chihuahua = 15 + 9 + (4 × 5) = 44, while a 7-year-old Great Dane = 15 + 9 + (7 × 5) = 59.

Why Big Dogs Age Faster
Large and giant breeds grow quickly and then age quickly. A Great Dane reaches senior status around 6-7 years and rarely lives past 10, while a Yorkshire Terrier or Chihuahua can live 15-17 years. Scientists believe larger bodies accumulate cellular damage faster — the same pattern appears across species, where smaller animals generally live longer than larger ones.
This is why breed size matters in the calculator: a dog age calculator that ignores size will misjudge a Great Dane as younger and a Chihuahua as older than they really are.
The "One Dog Year = 7 Human Years" Myth
Multiplying by 7 is a simple rule of thumb, but it is wrong in both directions. A 1-year-old dog is far more developed than a 7-year-old child, and a 10-year-old small dog (about 56 human years) is older than the 70 the 7-year rule suggests. Vets now use the age-scale method above, or the 2019 UCSD DNA formula: human age = 16 × ln(dog age) + 31.
