BMR Formulas Used in This Calculator

1. Mifflin-St Jeor Equation (Recommended)

Developed in 1990, this is currently considered the most accurate BMR formula for the general population:

Men: BMR = 10 × weight(kg) + 6.25 × height(cm) - 5 × age(y) + 5

Women: BMR = 10 × weight(kg) + 6.25 × height(cm) - 5 × age(y) - 161

Example: A 30-year-old man weighing 80 kg and 180 cm tall has a BMR of 10(80) + 6.25(180) - 5(30) + 5 = 800 + 1125 - 150 + 5 = 1,780 calories/day.

2. Revised Harris-Benedict Equation

Originally developed in 1919 and revised in 1984, this was the gold standard for decades:

Men: BMR = 13.397 × weight(kg) + 4.799 × height(cm) - 5.677 × age(y) + 88.362

Women: BMR = 9.247 × weight(kg) + 3.098 × height(cm) - 4.330 × age(y) + 447.593

This equation tends to slightly overestimate BMR compared to Mifflin-St Jeor, particularly in overweight individuals.

3. Katch-McArdle Formula

This formula uses lean body mass rather than total weight, making it the most accurate for individuals who know their body fat percentage:

BMR = 370 + 21.6 × (1 - body fat fraction) × weight(kg)

Where body fat fraction = body fat percentage / 100. For example, a person weighing 70 kg with 20% body fat has a lean mass of 70 × (1 - 0.20) = 56 kg, and a BMR of 370 + 21.6 × 56 = 1,580 calories/day.

  • Minimum calorie floors: Women should not consume fewer than 1,200 calories/day and men should not go below 1,500 calories/day without medical supervision.
  • Preserve muscle: Consume adequate protein (1.6-2.2 g per kg of body weight) and continue strength training during a deficit.
  • Don't cut too much: A deficit larger than 1,000 calories/day can slow metabolism, cause nutrient deficiencies, and lead to muscle loss.
  • Consider reverse dieting: After extended calorie restriction, gradually increase calories to restore metabolic rate before cutting again.

Maintenance, Cutting, and Bulking

In the fitness and nutrition world, different calorie phases are used for different goals:

  • Maintenance phase: Eating at TDEE. Ideal for sustaining current weight while allowing flexibility in diet. Useful during breaks between cutting and bulking cycles.
  • Cutting (weight loss) phase: Eating 300-500 calories below TDEE. The goal is to lose body fat while preserving as much muscle as possible. Typically lasts 8-16 weeks.
